Vases and Amphorae

Zev Robinson been working on a series of amphorae and vases freed from any context, becoming an icon in and of itself. The heavy use of sfumato creates a sense of the image emerging from an ethereal fog as well as its destruction over time like old frescos.

As with his other paintings, strong formal concerns are core to his paintings, with 30, 40 or more layers of paints that impart a rich sense of color and luminosity. The sensuality of color parallels that of the vases’ forms, imparting an underlying tension between the banality of the object and the possible meaning it may connote.
